Chemical Limits on X-ray Nanobeam Studies in Water

Operando X-ray studies of chemical reactions have gained increasing interest lately, fueled by the emergence a new generation powerful focused sources. Although it is well known that ionizing radiation causes damage to samples via radical chemistry, this effect often overlooked in working devices or catalysts where intense beams are used as nanoscale probes. Here, we show how an nanobeam directly phase transition shape-controlled Pd nanoparticles and large oxidative potential must be applied counteract effect. In addition, present reaction–diffusion model offers plausible qualitative explanation observations, which also suggests prohibitive concentrations reactive species will arise under any probe, calling into question validity these methods aqueous catalytic systems.
